Under the Public Health and Wellbeing Regulations 2019, there are 2 types of public aquatic facilities.
- Category 1 aquatic facility
Requires registration. Includes swimming pools, spa pools or interactive water features that:
- are used by members of the public, whether free of charge or on payment of a fee
- are used in association with a class or program that is offered free of charge or on payment of a fee
- are located at the premises of an early childhood service, school or other educational institution
- are located at the premises at which residential aged care services are provided
- are located at any of the following premises:
- a public hospital
- a private hospital
- a denominational hospital
- a privately-operated hospital within the meaning of section 3(1) of the Health Services Act 1988
- a multi-purpose service;
- Category 2 aquatic facility
Does not require registration. Includes swimming pools or spa pools that are used by members of the public and are located at the following types of premises:
- a residential apartment complex
- a hotel, motel or hostel
Both Category 1 and Category 2 aquatic facilities must:
- Comply with the Public Health and Wellbeing Regulations 2019 and the Department of Health’s Water Quality Guidelines.
- Have a water quality risk management plan. The Department of Health provides guidance and a template to assist with developing a water quality risk management plan.
