Food premises inspections

Mandatory inspections

Under the Food Act 1984, our Environmental Health Officers can inspect any business that is involved with the handling or sale of food.

We conduct inspections without prior notice to the food business. Inspections can occur at any time during business trading hours. Our inspections focus on a wide range of issues including:

  • cleanliness
  • temperature control
  • hygiene and food handling practices
  • pest control
  • maintenance of premises
  • waste storage

Inspections during the registration process

We also conduct inspections during the registration process. This is to make sure new food businesses meet the legislative requirements prior to receiving a food premises registration.

Request an inspection

If you are buying a food business, you can request an inspection prior to settlement to ensure the premises complies with the requirements of the Food Act 1984.

How to request an inspection

To request an inspection, please complete a Request for Inspection of Premises Form.

If you cannot submit by email, you can post your application.

What happens next

  • An Environmental Health Officer will contact you to organise an inspection time.
  • We will provide you with an inspection report 2-5 business days after the inspection (depending if it is a standard or urgent request). This report will identify anywhere your premises isn't meeting the requirements of the Food Act 1984.
