Casey reaches halfway point in purple glass bin rollout

More than half of Casey households have now received their new purple-lidded glass recycling bin, as the City of Casey continues rolling out the Victorian Government’s four-bin waste and recycling reforms.

The remaining households are on track to receive their bin by mid-November.

The new 80-litre glass-only bin is being delivered to households across Casey as part of the Victorian Government's requirement for all councils to transition to a standardised four-bin system by July 2027.

Residents who have already received their purple bin are encouraged to start using it now for glass bottles and jars that have contained food or drink. Once the bin arrives, these items should no longer be placed in the yellow-lidded recycling bin and instead should be placed in the purple bin.

Glass collections will begin in November and occur every four weeks on the same day as every second Food and Garden Organics (FOGO) collection.

City of Casey Manager of Sustainability and Waste Michael Jansen said Council was on track to meet the Victorian Government’s requirement to introduce a separate glass recycling service.

“While Council has previously raised community concerns about aspects of the waste reforms, we also have a responsibility to comply with State legislation and ensure the required services are in place for our community,” he said.

“With more than half of Casey households now receiving their purple bin, we’re encouraging residents to start using it and become familiar with what can and can’t go in each bin.

“The Bin It Right Casey app, the waste guide delivered with each bin and an online collection day search tool can help residents check their collection schedule and prepare for glass collections starting in November.”

What residents need to know

  • Glass bottles and jars of any colour that have contained food or drink can go in the purple bin. Simply rinse them, remove the lids and place them loosely in the bin - not in bags.
  • Glass collections will begin in November and occur every four weeks.
  • The purple bin will be collected on the same day as every second Food and Garden Organics (FOGO) collection.
  • Once your purple bin arrives, start placing accepted glass items in it. Glass bottles and jars will no longer be accepted in the yellow-lidded recycling bin.

To help residents manage the changes, Council is providing a range of resources, including:

  • The Bin It Right Casey app, which provides bin night reminders, collection schedules, service updates and information about what goes in each bin.
  • A waste guide delivered with every new glass recycling bin, showing what goes in each bin and the delivery schedule.
  • An online address search tool that allows residents to check their collection schedule and next bin collection day.

FOGO rollout continues

The purple glass recycling bin is one part of the Victorian Government’s four-bin waste and recycling reforms. Households that do not already have a FOGO bin will begin receiving one from late November 2026.

By 2027, all Casey households will have four bins as part of their standard waste service: a red-lidded general rubbish bin, yellow-lidded recycling bin, green-lidded FOGO bin and purple-lidded glass recycling bin.
