The City of Casey has officially launched two of its three mobile CCTV trailers, marking an important milestone in a three-year community safety initiative funded through a $900,000 Commonwealth Government grant.
On Friday 18 September, City of Casey Mayor Cr Michelle Crowther, Cr Jennifer Dizon, Cr Melinda Ambros, Cr Gary Rowe and Cr Stefan Koomen were joined by Federal Member for Holt, Cassandra Fernando and Anika Dell, representing Deakin University at the launch.
The third CCTV trailer is currently being developed and expected to be operational within the next month. The placement of the trailers will be determined by Victoria Police based on operational demand and will be limited for use within the City of Casey municipality.
Deakin University have also been engaged to conduct an independent evaluation to assess the effectiveness of the project, making Casey the only municipality in Australia undertaking this type of research. The evaluation is designed to consider value for money and provide Council an evidence base to inform future investment decisions beyond the grant period.
If CCTV has shown to have limited impact in certain settings, the evaluation will determine alternative safety measures that have also been funded as part of the grant, such as improved lighting, bollards and environmental design improvements.
