Around 100 students from nine local secondary schools came together last month for the inaugural Youth Climate Summit, delivered by the City of Casey, the Casey Youth Climate Action Committee and Casey Tech School.
The event featured interactive workshops, discussions with industry experts, a tertiary education panel, an inspiring keynote speaker, and a range of hands-on activities for students that focused on environmental sustainability and climate action.
City of Casey Councillor, Scott Dowling, who also spoke at the summit, said the aim of the event was to inspire young people to explore ways they could help create a more sustainable future and find out more about career options that help protect the environment.
“It was a privilege to see Casey’s Youth Climate Action Committee play a leading role in this inaugural summit and to see so many young people inspired to learn, share their ideas and consider the role they can play in the care of our environment,” said Cr Dowling.
“Council is committed to taking meaningful action to address climate change and promote sustainability across the community, and this summit was a wonderful opportunity to be able to share this information with Casey’s youth and to hear what was important to them.
“Bringing together young people from across Casey also helped them to see that they are not alone in their efforts and that there are other people their age who feel the same way they do and are willing to take action.”
