Building a Better Casey: community highlights top priorities for investment

The City of Casey recently completed a four-month engagement activity, highlighting Council’s advocacy priorities in the lead up to the November Victorian State Government Election.

As part of Council’s Building a Better Casey advocacy campaign, 56 projects and initiatives were presented to community members across Council’s three priority areas — Better Transport and Roads; Community Infrastructure; and Safe and Thriving Communities. 

Between March and July, community members shared their thoughts around why the projects and initiatives were important to them at 12 in-person pop-up sessions across Casey, and via an online community survey. 

Results indicate that the highest-ranked projects and initiatives across the municipality are: 
1.    Clyde Rail Link.
2.    Homelessness and housing affordability.
3.    Clyde Road Corridor upgrade.
4.    Bus network improvements.
5.    Non-Council road maintenance.

Community members also consistently highlighted the need for:
•    Improved transport connectivity and reduced congestion.
•    Better public transport options, across rail and bus services.
•    Long-term infrastructure planning to support population growth.
•    Greater support for vulnerable residents experiencing housing stress, food insecurity, and mental health challenges.

City of Casey Mayor Cr Michelle Crowther acknowledged that transport and roads continue to be a key priority for the community and thanked community members for taking the time to provide feedback.

“Community feedback will help Council build a strong evidence base, that will support our advocacy to government for future funding and investment. Council is also utilising this feedback to inform our future planning, and guide where investment is needed most in the community,” she said.

“From fixing potholes and maintaining existing roads to securing the new roads and improved public transport needed to support Casey’s growth. Our residents deserve safe, well-maintained roads and better connections, and Council will continue to advocate for the funding and action needed to address the backlog and improve the road network across Casey.”
