The City of Casey is proud to host The Durga Chronicles, a contemporary performance which aims to bring awareness to gendered violence.
Produced by Priya Srinivasan, the performance brings together international collaborators and local artists who form the incredible Keerthana Women’s Choir.
The performance uses music, dance and stunning visuals, along with a Carnatic choir of 12 women, to create a storytelling experience that is both harrowing and moving.
With the launch of Council’s A Safe and Equal Casey: Gender Equality and Prevention of Violence Against Women Strategic Plan in 2022, this event is one of several upcoming engagements which will assist Council in building the community’s understanding and connection to gender equality.
As part of the Safe and Equal Casey strategic plan, Council wants to ensure that women and gender diverse people are heard, and have the opportunity to influence decisions that affect their lives.
City of Casey Chair of Administrators Noelene Duff PSM, is proud to have Bunjil Place hosting this very special event.
“We know that The City of Casey has the highest number of reported family violence incidents* in Victoria; and international and Australian research shows that violence against women is driven by gender inequality,” said Ms Duff.
“The Durga Chronicles is a unique performance that will no doubt help us increase awareness of gendered violence and gender equality.”
The Durga Chronicles premiered at Melbourne’s Arts House in 2022 with support from Australia Council, Multicultural Arts Victoria and Abbotsford Convent.
It has received three Green Room Award Nominations (2022) for Outstanding Creation, Best Visual Design and Breaking Ground, and is the winner of the 2023 “Breaking Ground” Green Room Award.
The Durga Chronicles will be held at Bunjil Place on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 October.
