A rugby league storm to hit Casey Fields

In great news for Rugby League fans, the City of Casey will partner with NRL team Melbourne Storm as they take on North Queensland on Saturday 29 February at Casey Fields in Cranbourne East.

It will be the Storm’s final pre-season game for 2020 and the first they have played in the south-east area—so a sell-out crowd is expected!

The match will kick off at 5:30 pm on the main Casey Fields football ground, which has a capacity for nine thousand spectators thanks to the recent pavilion redevelopment. Melbourne Storm Operations Coordinator and former player Ryan Hoffman said that the venue was perfect for Rugby League fans.

“I’ve seen the ground; I’ve seen the dimensions. The crowd is going to get a fantastic view of the field. It’s a great opportunity for people to see some of the stars of the game up close and personal, get photos, autographs and say g’day to the players,” he said.

“This is our last trial game before the season starts, so the fans will certainly see two teams having a red-hot go.”

Rugby league on the rise

With seven clubs and over four thousand players in the area, Hoffman noted how much local interest in Rugby has grown.

“There were six local clubs when I first came down here and now there’s seven in Melbourne’s south-east alone, including the Casey Warriors, the second-biggest club in Victoria,” he said.

“It’s really exciting for us to hold a game in the suburbs where there’s a real love for our great sport. We’re looking forward to engaging with all our fans,” Hoffman said.

Both the Storm and the Cowboys will be out and about in the Casey area during the week before the game.

The match will sit in the middle of three bumper weekends at Casey Fields that will showcase the ground’s ability to cater to different codes. There’s an AFL pre-season match between Melbourne and Adelaide on 22 February and an AFLW match between Melbourne and West Coast on 8 March.

Tickets for the game are on sale now. There is also a special “Casey Fields Membership” offer featuring access to the trial game and one 2020 Melbourne Storm NRL home game.
