September is Biodiversity month and the City of Casey has a calendar packed with fun and educational events for all ages from nighttime nature walks, to gardening talks and discovering more about bees, butterflies and spiders.
City of Casey Mayor, Cr Michelle Crowther said it was a great opportunity to discover more about the natural environment that exists right in our own back yard.
“With so many events happening throughout the month, I encourage everyone to get outdoors and discover the amazing plants and animals that also call Casey home.”
The month kicks off with the Biodiveristy Blitz where all Casey residents have the change to become community scientists.
Participating is easy - just head into your backyard at any time throughout September to snap photos of flora and fauna in the Casey area and upload them to the iNaturalist website. Your observations will automatically be added to this project and you'll be showing the world the amazing biodiversity Casey has to offer.

Threatened Species Event at Myuna farm – 2 September
Catch the Mayuna Farm train down to the wetlands to visit the threatened Grey-headed flying foxes, then join in a cake decorating activity for the Threatened Species Bake Off (baked goods provided).

The Australian Plant Society plant sale and sustainable gardens talk – 5 September
If you’ve been thinking about bringing more indigenous plants to your garden, you’ll find plenty to choose, along with specialist advice, at the plant sale held on Saturday 5 September at Akoonah Park from 9am to 3pm.
Stallholders will have plants that suit local conditions, support wildlife, encourage biodiversity, and won’t break the budget. There will also be plant giveaways, flower displays and raffle prizes.
If you’re after more inspiration, one of Australia’s top landscape designers, Phillip Johnson will be presenting a talk on Sustainable Gardens using Australian Native Plants in the Function Centre at 10am. Buzzing with Bees, Beautiful Butterflies & Backyard Biodiversity – free event, 23 September
Discover the wonderful world of bees, butterflies and other pollinators at the Old Cheese factory, Berwick on Wednesday 23 September.
Explore the gardens with Council’s biodiversity team to search for insects and learn about the important role pollinators play in keeping gardens healthy and thriving. Children will enjoy hands-on activities, build their own insect hotel to take home and receive a pollinator-friendly plant to help create habitat in their own backyard.
Suitable for children aged 5-12 years. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Night Safari – Moths and Spiders – free event, 29 September
Come along on a night safari and discover the moths, spiders and other nocturnal insects that call Morning Mist Recreation Reserve home.
Run by members of the Entomological Society of Victoria and The Arachnid Academy, you’ll search for invertebrates in bushland areas and then photograph and record the insects you find, all of which contribute to the 2026 Biodiversity Blitz.
Suitable for all ages and levels of experience. Children need to be supervised by a parent or guardian at all times.
