On Friday 7 August 2026, Cr Stefan Koomen announced to Council his intention to run for Victorian Parliament in the State Elections to be held on the 28 November.

Standing for State election is a personal decision. Under the Local Government Act 2020 announcing intention to stand as a candidate does not require a Councillor to step down from Council or the Mayor to step down from their role.

However, Cr Koomen has confirmed that from 4pm Tuesday 18 August, he will step down from his position as Mayor of the City of Casey. Cr Koomen will continue in his role as Councillor for Waratah Ward.

The election of a new Mayor is intended to take place at a Special Council Meeting on Tuesday 18 August.

The newly elected Mayor will represent Casey until our routine annual Mayoral elections, which take place on 17 November 2026.
