Step 1 | Contact Council's Heritage Planner to discuss eligibility, scope of works or professional advice and to arrange a free initial onsite meeting with Council's Heritage Advisor. |
Step 2 | Contact Council’s Duty Planner to determine whether a planning permit is required.

Step 3 |
Lodge an application for a heritage grant together with all supporting documentation, including quotations, a copy of the planning permit or a copy of the response to the planning enquiry confirming a planning permit is not required. |
Step 4 |
Applicants are notified of the outcome of their application. If successful, applicants to commence approved project. |
Step 5 |
Upon completion of approved project, applicant must notify the Heritage Planner to verify that the conditions of the approved application are met. Once verified, the applicant should lodge claim for acquittal of application. |
Purpose of this grant
The City of Casey recognises the value of our heritage in the restoration, conservation, maintenance and enhancement of significant aspects of a heritage building or place.
Eligibility
To be eligible for funding, projects must:
- not have commenced nor been completed;
- either not require a planning permit or you must have already obtained a planning permit;
- and comply with the Australia ICOMOS Burra Charter.
Who can apply for this grant
You can apply for this grant if you own, occupy or manage a heritage place listed on the Schedule to the Clause 43.01 (Heritage Overlay) of the Casey Planning Scheme.
Who cannot apply for this grant
You cannot apply for this grant if:
- you have failed to complete any previous projects funded through our Heritage Grants program.
- your place is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register (funding may be available through a state government grant program).
What we can fund
We provide funding for:
Urgent conservation works
For example:
- re-roofing
- verandah
- salt rise damp
- stumping
- repointing
Professional advice and documentation
For example:
- advice, documented drawings, specifications and details for conservation work.
- site inspections
- engineering or structural advice
- conservation management plans
- reuse option studies
- photographic and archaeological surveys
What we cannot fund
- Works to/documentation for a place listed on the Victorian Heritage Register
- Additions to the heritage place
- Works required due to a repair order issued by the City of Casey
- Works/documentation commenced or completed
- Speculative reconstruction works where there is no historical evidence of the earlier appearance of the place
- Works to trees and gardens
Applying
Refer to the '5 steps' above.
What to include in your application
You must include the following details and documents with your application:
- Your contact details.
- The property street address.
- A current colour photograph of the property and close-up photographs of the areas to which works will be carried out.
- A detailed written description of the proposed works, including (as appropriate):
- maps
- reports
- plans
- diagrams
- photographs
- A copy of a planning permit or letter from Council confirming that a planning permit is not required (i.e in response to the planning enquiry).
- A record of any prior advice sought from a qualified heritage practitioner, including a heritage impact assessment, conservation management plan or heritage action plan.
- A copy of recent quotations for the proposed works/advice that clearly detail and identify the full scope of the project (including the material to be used). Included quotations must be no more than 6 months old.
- For works up to and including $3000 – at least 1 written quote
- For works above $3000 – at least 2 written quotes
How we decide on successful grants
We will only assess your application if you have provided all the required information at the time of lodging the application.
We may request to inspect the property to help with our assessment of your application.
We will then assess your application using the following criteria:
- The heritage significance of the place and fabric to which works are proposed.
- How you propose to undertake the works.
- The evidence you have provided to show that the works are necessary, such as advice from a qualified heritage practitioner.
- The type and urgency of the conservation works.
- The benefit of developing heritage documents.
- Compliance with the Burra Charter.
- Community benefit and the potential to raise heritage awareness.
- Compliance with the guidelines and requirements in this document.
If your application is successful
If your application is successful, we will send you a letter outlining want you need to do next. We will also provide you with updates by phone and email.
Receiving the funding
We will only transfer the funding to you (by electronic bank transfer) once:
Urgent conservation works
The works are completed and verified by inspection of Council's Heritage Advisor. We reserve the right to take and use photographs for evidence and promotional purposes.
Professional advice and documentation
The documentation is finalised and approved by Council's Heritage Advisor. It is recommended that a draft of the document is provided to Council's Heritage Advisor prior to finalisation.
Acquittal process
In order to receive the funding you must complete the 'claim form' in Smarty Grants.
