Young People's After Hours Needs - City of Casey
The City of Casey has commissioned the following report after an intense period of commentary in the media about the behaviour of some young people in Casey. The purpose of this report is to assist the Council to better understand the issues that impact on the out of hours needs of young people that live in the municipality.
Methodology
The consultancy undertook research that included talking with young people, service providers, Police, Local Government services, parents and some Councillors. The following methodology was employed:
- A review of literature and related documents;
- Consultations with a range of key stakeholders using a variety of methods;
- Distribution of a questionnaire; and
- The development of a report that synthesises common themes and provides recommendations for further action
Generally the issues that were identified particularly by families and young people were not ones that they had encountered themselves, but had read about in the local papers or heard about.
The issues that were raised by stakeholders generally fell within one or more of the following categories:
- Public transport;
- Lack of services;
- Perceived lack of safety;
- Availability and promotion of activities for young people; and
- Family related issues.
An important issue is the lack of services that address the needs of families and young people both during business hours and out of hours.
