Riding of the Bounds

This unique annual sporting event in Casey is based on a traditional activity of Casey’s sister city of Berwick-upon-Tweed, England, which is more than 500 years old.
The City of Casey’s 22nd annual Riding of the Bounds event attracted more than 100 riders on horseback and in horse-drawn vehicles on Sunday 1 May 2011.
City of Casey Mayor Cr Shar Balmes said at the event ‘This year’s ride is a particularly special one as it is taking place on the same date as the 402nd Riding of the Bounds in Berwick-upon-Tweed in the UK and it gives me great pleasure to take part in this historical re-enactment that brings our heritage so vividly to life.’
Cr Balmes and Shire of Cardinia Mayor Cr George Blenkhorn conducted an official ceremony to inspect the boundaries of the two municipalities and City of Casey Councillors Wayne Smith, Amanda Stapledon and Geoff Ablett participated in the ride.
Award winners for the 2011 Riding of the Bounds were:
- Champion Rider - Hotspur Trophy: Lesley Hurst
- Mayor's Choice - King Robert The Bruce Trophy: Ruby Conlan
- Best Presented Group - Kay Irving Trophy: Willow Lodge Riding Ranch
- Best Horse Drawn Vehicle - Grace Darling Trophy: Peter O'Hagan
- Most Australian Rider - Ned Kelly Trophy: John Glover
- Best Western Turnout - Sir William Wallace Trophy: Luke Smithard
Following the awards, riders enjoyed a barbecue lunch and some live music.
