In June 2002, the City of Casey commissioned Ecology Australia to produce a Biodiversity Enhancement Strategy for the local government area of the City of Casey (395 km2). The resulting Strategy aims to provide a Casey-wide (all land tenures) mapping and management strategy for the total distribution of biological diversity. This includes a comprehensive inventory of remnant terrestrial native flora and fauna, including significant communities, their condition and threats as well as the preparation of management guidelines and prescriptions to ensure the long-term conservation of these sites.
The Strategy is presented in two parts. Part 1 is provides an overview of the finding of the Biodiversity Enhancement Strategy. It also includes an outline of existing laws, plans and guidelines applicable to biodiversity in the region. In particular, relevant aspects of local (Municipal) laws, local conservation strategies and planning schemes are considered. Biodiversity management and enhancement issues in the region are reviewed. Goals, objectives, policies and processes for biodiversity management are proposed, and major areas of biodiversity are identified.
Part 2 presents the Sites of biodiversity significance identified during the study. Each site is dealt with individually and includes
- a EVC Quality or Condition assessment for each site;
- EVC classification of vegetation type/s present;
- assessment of vegetation significance (including plant species) at the Local, Regional, State or National scale;
- identification of threats and management issues for vegetation and fauna habitats e.g. weed invasions (the most significant weed species will be recorded), revegetation, dieback, clearing, stock grazing, rabbits, urban development;
- GPS location (recorded as AMG suitable for Council’s GIS); and
- a list of indigenous and exotic plant species (recorded, where possible, at sites of moderate to high significance).
