Multicultural Youth Development Officer
A quarter of City Casey residents were born in non-English speaking countries with over 150 languages spoken. Council is keen to ensure that its role in the community remains effective and relevant in the provision and development of Youth Services for young people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CaLD) backgrounds.
In 2006 Council employed a Multicultural Youth Development Officer with the aim of:
- Developing and delivering a range of programs and activities targeting young people from CaLD backgrounds.
- Supporting CaLD and other community agencies with the implementation of young programs and activities across the municipality.
- Actively involve young people who are refugees or newly arrived to Australia, where English may be a second language.
- Actively work with community leaders, parents, other ethno-specific youth workers and multicultural specific agencies in the planning and implementation of all programs and activities
- Establish and develop ongoing partnerships with ethno-specific organisations, community groups and voluntary organisations to enable key strategic issues to be addressed.
- Support the implementation of community-building activities to foster a sense of community belonging and participation amongst CaLD young people
- Facilitate and encourage links between service providers, community health sector and education to the benefit of young people from CaLD.
- Raise awareness of participation opportunities for young people and their families, and act as a resource and referral point for the community.
The position champions the cause of multicultural young people and their families in Casey, runs specific multicultural programs and activities and facilitates links to community and recreational service providers. The multicultural officer works closely with multicultural agencies and other community agencies servicing Casey. During 2008 a number of successful Multicultural events were held including:
- Soccer Fest
- Multi-faith Tour
- ESL Bridging Program
- Multicultural - Teenage Holiday Program
- Sail Away Lord Somers Camp
- AFL Trip
- Eco-Challenge 11
