Current and future generations of residents will enjoy the benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle with the opening of the Grices Road Recreation Reserve on Sunday 19 August 2012.
City of Casey Mayor Cr Sam Aziz joined with The Hon. Hugh Delahunty MP, Minister for Sport and Recreation, to open the eagerly-anticipated sport and recreation facility in Berwick.
Cr Aziz said at the opening ‘Council is committed to developing first-class sporting and recreational facilities in the municipality to promote healthy, active and connected communities.
‘With more than 460 men, women and children involved with the Berwick Regional Churches Soccer Club and Berwick Springs Cricket Club, the benefits to our community will be significant and lasting’, added Cr Aziz.
The $5.3 million project included the establishment of:
- New pavilion including four change rooms with amenities, internal andexternal store rooms, kitchen/kiosk with store room, cleaners room, toilets, referees room, first aid room and an outdoor undercover area
- Three soccer fields
- Cricket overlay oval and cricket practice nets
- LED scoreboard
- District playground.
The City of Casey provided funding of $4.6 million, with the State Government contributing $500,000 funding through the Department of Planning and Community Development towards the pavilion and the Federal Government contributing $185,500 towards a water harvesting project to reuse stormwater on the playing fields.
‘In partnership with the State and Federal Governments, we are proud to deliver this project for the benefit of our local community’, added Cr Aziz.
