The City of Casey was announced the winner of the Pam Keating Environmental Sustainability Award for Selandra Community Place at the 2012 Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria Sustainable Cities and Clean Beaches Awards in Melbourne on Friday 27 July 2012.
The Sustainable Cities and Clean Beaches Awards celebrate and recognise the positive actions taken by Councils, local community groups, schools and individuals in Victoria to protect and enhance the local environment.
The Pam Keating Environmental Sustainability Award recognises outstanding achievement in using resources more efficiently, therefore decreasing the environmental footprint. The focus is on innovation to educate, demonstrate and bring about change to everyday practices.
City of Casey Mayor Cr Sam Aziz said ‘The City of Casey is pleased to be recognised for our efforts to educate the community about environmental sustainability through the development of Selandra Community Place.
‘With a an expected population of 450,000 by 2036 – planning for environmentallysustainable communities is a priority for Council’, said Cr Aziz.
Selandra Community Place, located in Cranbourne East, is an Australian-first project delivered by the City of Casey, Stockland, Henley Properties Group and South East Councils Climate Change Alliance (SECCCA).
The eight-star, zero energy display home uses the latest technology and building practices and supports residents to think sustainably when building their own homes and through their everyday actions.
‘Council identified that in order to continue delivering livable and sustainable communities for our residents that we needed to be as innovative as possible. As a result, Selandra Community Place is an Australian-first for local government working together with a range of partners to deliver a planned, connected and sustainable community where residents’ needs, wellbeing and lifestyle have been considered.
‘At Selandra Community Place, residents can discover information that will help them select sustainable options for their homes and are encouraged to view the range of interactive displays, DVD animations and ‘take home’ information cards designed to help them make sustainable decisions.
‘A sustainability program is run by SECCCA onsite and environmental advice is available including a popular one-on-one consultation which provides residents with information about sustainable building techniques’, said Cr Aziz.
This year, the awards attracted 100 separate initiatives and the City of Casey was pleased to be announced a finalist in eight categories:

- Cultural Heritage Award: Heritage Initiative Grant
- Pam Keating Environmental Sustainability Award: Selandra Community Place
- Protection of the Environment Award: Western Port Treasures - Discover the magic beyond the mangroves
- Water Efficiency Award: Selandra Community Place
- Efficient Energy Award: Selandra Community Place
- Active Schools Award: Strathaird Primary School’s Endangered Ecosystem Garden Project
The City of Boroondara, as the winner of the Victorian Sustainable City of the Year Award, will go on to represent Victoria at the Australian Sustainable City Awards.
