Residents are reminded that parking vehicles on nature strips is an offence under state legislation and penalties apply.
City of Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said ‘Traffic laws ensure the safety on and around Victoria’s roads for the benefit of all road users and pedestrians.
‘Parking a vehicle on a nature strip causes issues for other road users and pedestrians. People park illegally sometimes not realising that they are inconveniencing others and may put others in danger.
‘In the past year, Council has received more than 1,600 complaints from concerned residents in relation to illegally parked vehicles within the municipality. More than 800 infringement notices were issued to illegally parked vehicles that were parked on nature strips, including vehicles obstructing the footpath’, added Cr Aziz.
Dangers include pedestrians and road users not being able to see or manoeuvre around parked cars and damage caused to the nature strip vegetation.
Another common offence is vehicles parked on nature strips or in a public place that are advertised “For Sale”. Offering vehicles for sale at intersections or nature strips is dangerous to highway traffic and is detrimental to the amenity of the area. It is also a breach of the City of Casey Community Local Law 2/2010 and the Summary Offences Act 1966, and significant penalties apply.
Council and the Police regularly patrol, monitor and enforce illegally parked vehicles detected within the municipality.
