Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to provide a consistent set of guidelines for Council in relation to the duties of the Deputy Mayor.

General

The Deputy Mayor Position Policy specifies that the Deputy Mayor will be the immediate past Mayor where he or she is a sitting Councillor and set out the role of the Deputy Mayor, including chairing of Council Meetings in the Mayor's absence (provided that a vote is taken to elect the Deputy Mayor as the temporary Chairperson). Other activities include deputising for the Mayor at a range of engagements and being available to provide general advice to the Mayor. The Policy operates on the basis that the role and duties of Deputy Mayor shall not compromise the traditional roles of Ward Councillors in representing the Mayor at activities within a ward.
