The City of Casey elected its new Mayor Councillor Geoff Ablett at a Special Council Meeting on Monday 13 November. Having represented the Balla Balla Ward since 2008, this is the third term as Mayor for Cr Ablett, previously serving in 2008-09 and 2013-14.
Councillors Amanda Stapledon and Wayne Smith BJ JP were both elected as Council’s Deputy Mayors..
In accepting his appointment, Cr Ablett said how much of an honour it is to be in the position again, and confirmed he will work alongside his fellow Councillors to pursue many opportunities for the City.
“I would like to thank my fellow Councillors for their support of me for this Mayoral term. I will strive to be the best voice for the Council as we deliver results for the benefit of our City” said the Mayor.
“I am passionate about providing facilities for the health and wellbeing of our residents. I will be looking at how we can work with health providers to pool resources to plan for and reduce the rising suicide rate, as well as providing more mental health services for our residents.
“I will also continue work to create more local jobs by engaging with economies both locally and internationally. Our challenge will be to build businesses and acquire investment from all over the world to grow our local economy to generate more job opportunities.
“Advocating for transport priorities will also be high on the agenda, with a focus on extending the rail line out to Clyde, providing better bus services and network improvements, as well as securing a commitment for an arterial road package like the one that was provided in the growth area west of Melbourne.
“Thank you to outgoing Mayor Cr Sam Aziz for leading this group of Councillors through the first year of our term. You have achieved a great deal for our City and I look forward to continuing to build on this great work with you and my fellow Councillors”.
City of Casey Chief Executive Officer Mike Tyler congratulated the new Mayor on behalf of the staff of Council.
