It was time to celebrate at Merinda Park Learning and Community Centre (MPLCC) in Cranbourne North yesterday (Thursday) following the completion of a $1.15m project to extend and upgrade the facility.

City of Casey Mayor Cr Sam Aziz officially opened the extension and renewal works in front of 100 staff, volunteers and students at a celebration which also marked the centre’s 25th anniversary.

Council invested $1m in the project, with MPLCC contributing the remaining $150,000, to deliver;

  • New counselling suites
  • Modernised external façade of the facility
  • A new reception area and administration space
  • An upgraded commercial kitchen
  • New and additional bathroom amenities including an ambulant bathroom and disabled bathroom with shower
  • Upgrades to the main hall and children’s rooms.

City of Casey Mayor Cr Sam Aziz said the upgrades will enable the centre to better meet the needs of the local community.

“MPLCC is one of Casey’s busiest community facilities; more than 1,000 Casey residents visit the centre each week to participate in adult and youth education programs, access the childcare programs or make a booking with the centre’s counselling services,” Cr Aziz said.

“Council recognises the importance of providing community, sporting and educational facilities for our residents and the positive contribution facilities like MPLCC make to the well-being of individuals and ultimately of the whole community.”

The Mayor added that the upgrades would allow MPLCC to build upon the services it offers.

“These upgrades provide a more welcoming and accessible environment where local residents can access affordable adult education, English language programs and VCAL classes.

“The centre also provides childcare, before and after school hour care, counselling services and is a hub for local residents and community groups to come together.

“We’re proud to deliver a range of improvements for all those who access this highly valued facility, and the team at MPLCC are excited to be able to deliver new and innovative programs for the local community,” Cr Aziz concluded.
