Fresh Words Young Writers Competition 2024

Unleash the storyteller in you and put your imagination on paper for your chance to win some great prizes! 

The Fresh Words Young Writers competition is open to students in Grade 5 – Year 12 in the following categories:  

  • Creative Writing - Maximum 750 words (any topic/theme)  
  • Poetry/Lyrics - Maximum 1 page (any topic/theme)  
  • English as an Additional Language - Maximum 750 words (any topic/theme, open to students who are currently enrolled in EAL studies)

Entries open Monday 4 March and close at 5 pm on Friday 26 April 2024.

Casey Young Writers Festival

City of Casey Youth Services and Connected Libraries present the Young Writers Festival, a fun-filled day of workshops and Q&As with your favourite Australian authors. 

  • Date: Tuesday 9 April 
  • Venue: Cranbourne Library (65 Berwick-Cranbourne Rd, Cranbourne) 

Festival Schedule 

9.30am – 11am Pirates and Peril with Gabriel Bergmoser

What makes the perfect adventure story? Darkness? Danger? Action? Fun? The end of the world or a hunt for hidden treasure?

In this workshop Gabriel Bergmoser, author of the Boone Shepard Trilogy and the upcoming Andromache Between Worlds, will explore famous adventure stories from The Lord of the Rings to Pirates of the Caribbean and Star Wars to work out the best way to tell our own.

11am – 12.30pm Getting Started with George Ivanoff

Through a series of short written exercises, George Ivanoff will show you how to use your own experiences and interests as inspiration for writing fiction. Then, he’ll take you through the planning process, showing how easy it is to structure a story and create an engaging narrative.

1pm – 2.30pm The Poetry Corner: A beginners guide to Poetry & Spokenword with Jasmine Cenci

Step into the world of poetry and spokenword with this engaging workshop by Jasmine Cenci. You will learn how to create your own poetry and try spokenword in a supportive and encouraging environment.

Workshops are FREE and open to young people in Grade 5 to Year 12 who live/study in the City of Casey.

FReeZA Committee – IGN!TE Entertainment 

FReeZA is a Victorian Government initiative that supports young Victorians to get involved in the community by planning and running drug, alcohol, and smoke-free events for other young people.

FReeZA Youth Committee - IGN!TE Entertainment is looking for Casey young people aged 12-25 to join the committee. 

As a committee member, you will be able to:

  • Learn about event management from planning to delivery, with a focus on creating safe and fun events for your peers.
  • Gain hands-on experience in all aspects of event management, including artist liaison, stage management, and technical production.
  • Meet other young people from your community and make a difference.
  • Develop valuable skills that you can use in your future career or to make a difference in your community.
  • Network with other young people and professionals.
  • Support local musicians, artists, and performers.

To apply, please complete the expression of interest form. Applications for Expressions of Interest close on Friday, 9 February, 2024.

The program begins Tuesday, 5 March 2024.

FReeZA program delivers every two weeks during the school term. 

  • When: Tuesdays, every two weeks 
  • Time: 5:30pm - 7:30pm 
  • Location: Narre Warren Youth Information Centre 
  • Cost: FREE
