Who can have a second year of funded kindergarten?
A child is eligible for a second year of funded kindergarten if their teacher assesses the child as having significant delays in at least two areas of development and will achieve better outcomes at kindergarten rather than going to school.
Who can I talk to about a second year of kindergarten?
It is recommended that you talk to your kindergarten teacher about your child's eligibility for a second year of funded kindergarten, as they are the person responsible for completing the application. Your decision can be supported by any specialists your child may be attending and also through a visit by the Preschool Field Officer, who observes your child within the context of a group learning environment, sharing and discussing information on all of the options for your child.
More information about deferment and second year options can be found at The Department of Education and Training website.
